Thought Police officially started around March 2009, but Brett and Sean had been jamming on and off together for over 16 years, with many a failed attempt at establishing 'THE' band that was finally going to be 'THE ONE' that could take them on the musical journey they'd been dreaming about all their lives. After a rigorous recruitment drive at the start of 2009 they managed to find exactly what they’d been searching for - two awesomely talented musicians in Chris and Owen, but most importantly, two great and passionate guys that they had more in common with than they could have hoped for: very similar musical influences, strong personal values and the desire to change the world through music - or at least make a difference! The chemistry and energy was there immediately and the songs started pouring out - less than 15 months down the track the band is musically very tight with a polished repertoire of close to 25 songs.
The name "Thought Police" AKA 'ThinkPol' is the secret police of Oceania in George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. It was the job of the Thought Police to uncover and punish 'thought crime' and 'thought-criminals' using psychology and omnipresent surveillance. It had much to do with Orwell’s own "power of facing unpleasant facts", as he called it, and his willingness to criticize prevailing ideas which brought him into conflict with others and their "smelly little orthodoxies". By extension, the term "Thought Police" has come to refer to real or perceived enforcement of ideological correctness, or preemptive policing, where a person is apprehended in anticipation of the possibility that they may commit a crime, in any modern or historical contexts. So too we hope that our music will be thought-provoking, and deliver commentary on certain personal and broader issues we face each day. Of course, there's also a number of our songs that are simply good 'ol kick-ass rock 'n roll!
Our music often takes a view on life in general, or talks about some of the challenges we may face on a daily basis, or have perhaps faced in the past. We may pass commentary on unpleasant truths we see in the world today, in the hope that our music will have a positive and eye-opening effect on the views and actions that people may take in the future. Hey, we may even turn out to be somewhat daring and even controversial at times, but that's why you love us!
